Style Suggestions
Just because you’re no longer 25 doesn’t mean you can’t have a modern haircut -- and, no, that doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice length either.
“I think definitely you can’t have Rapunzel hair, you know, Lady Godiva hair, but I think you can definitely get barely below-the-collarbone kind of hair,” said Vo, mentioning actress Sophia Loren as someone who pulls off this look well. “I think finally accepting your hair with curls and not flat ironing and straightening is so lovely now. Before you could cut into the curls to make it more edgy. I call them lobs -- long bobs.”
In addition to Loren, Vo cites actress Helen Mirren and fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg -- “she’s really radiating the '70s and really owning it” -- as good models for older women.
Walker agrees that a bob is a hit with her older clients because of its versatility and low maintenance. Hall also likes to cut her mature clients’ “hair in a style that's simple, but flirty,” especially, she says, because they may have a touch of arthritis.
Still want to go longer?
Walker said that’s fine, but advises that those who do should “avoid one cut at the bottom, (as in) no layers and one blunt cut. That always ends up feeling very dated. You want to hold onto a style as you age. You want something that looks like it has some thought put into it instead of something that looks kind of drab.”
